Man Convicted of Newton National Guard Armory Break-In

A Sussex County jury recently found a man guilty on theft charges.

The suspect is a 55-year-old man who was accused of breaking into the Newton National Guard Armory and stealing copper piping and radiators. The suspect also allegedly caused extensive damage to the facility during the break-in.

According to authorities, the suspect unlawfully entered the building on South Park Drive and stole items. Later, the suspect allegedly sold the stolen items to George’s Salvage Company.

The suspect faced criminal charges for theft of movable property, burglary, and criminal mischief. When the suspect failed to reach a plea deal with the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office, his case headed to trial.

At the conclusion of a trial in Sussex County Superior Court, the suspect was found guilty on all of the criminal charges.

The suspect also faces additional criminal charges for aggravated assault and weapons offenses. That’s because he allegedly attacked a man in a separate incident just a few days after the Newton National Guard Armory burglary.
