Former Newton Cop Offered Plea Deal in Sexual Assault Case
An ex-cop in Newton, NJ was reportedly offered a plea deal by Sussex County prosecutors that would allow him to avoid trial and serve five years in prison for allegedly sexually assaulting a teenage boy.
The suspect is a 40-year-old man from Hampton, New Jersey. He previously worked as a police officer with the Newton Police Department, but he later resigned after being arrested and charged with sexual assault.
According to Sussex County officials, the suspect entered the bathroom of a Burger King fast food restaurant and sexually assaulted a 16-year-old boy. Police investigated and later arrested the suspect.
The suspect faces criminal charges for sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, among other sex crimes. He has already been indicted on five charges.
Now it appears that the suspect could avoid trial in Sussex County Superior Court. However, the suspect’s attorney reportedly indicated that his client is “not inclined” to accept the plea offer from the prosecutor’s office.
